Rush found himself holding his breath. Unwise, considering the smoke he’d just inhaled from his cheroot, and he coughed it out, trying to be quiet.

He’d attempted to reach Abby all day, growing more afraid as time passed without seeing her. Until she’d appeared in the window, opening the glass and seemingly unharmed.

Then he’d breathed a sigh of relief and started climbing up the building. But he’d hit an impasse. He couldn’t go any further up and the distance between her window and the balcony had to be fifteen feet. She couldn’t come down, either.

And then he’d heard Clarence enter.

He’d known without hesitation that if Clarence attempted to hurt her, Rush would break down the front door and take her away forever.

But the man had left again.

And now he sat with a weight on his chest, waiting for her answer. “A baroness?” she repeated, sounding completely confused.

He winced the slightest bit, glad for the dark as he looked away. “Some women might think that a man with a title, one who isn’t a bastard, might be superior.” Who was he kidding? Even his own father had held that notion. Why wouldn’t she?

But her next words made his heart stop. “Those women would be fools.”

“Abby,” he breathed out as air rushed from his lungs. Had he had this wrong all along? How could that be? She’d told him that he’d ruined her future. But even East had said that her worries were likely financial. “You don’t care about being titled?”

“No,” she answered simply. “I care about being safe.”

The words made sense and he held them in his chest, wanting to believe them.

“The wedding is tomorrow,” she said, quietly enough that he might not have heard except the words made his chest tighten.

“Tell me honestly. The choice is still yours. And in the letter you said…” The letter. It still made him ache.

She’d confessed her deepest feelings and swore that she’d gone with Clarence to save Rush. Twice in a single day, two people had raced to his aid. If he counted East, that was three who’d been helping him.

A man could start to think London wasn’t such a bad place to be after all. And all this time, he’d been attempting to escape this life for a new one.

“Choice?” she asked, leaning further out the window. “What choice is that?”

“Him or me? Knowing that I can’t give you a title. That you won’t get your dowry.” His fingers tightened on the railing as she looked down at him, her gaze unreadable in the dark.

“You.”

That one word made his chest swell and he stamped out his cheroot, his mind springing into action. “Take the linens from your bed and tie them together.”

“What?” she asked, straightening. “Do you want me to climb down?”

“No. I’m going to come up,” he answered, new resolve making his spine stiff and straight. “And then we’re going to find a way out.”

“Are you certain?” she asked, shaking her head. “Is it safe?”

But he didn’t answer as a noise caught his ear.
